What is Problem Gambling and What Assistance is Available?

A federal government enquiry into the gambling industry in Australia (1999) stated, “around 2.1% of Australians had a gambling problem” that’s around 300,000 people.

Gambling problems do not just affect the gambler. Family, friends and co-workers can also be affected. Gambling can lead to health problems and relationship problems.

One of the biggest problems for gamblers is that they often find themselves in debt.

Problem gambling, also known as compulsive or pathological gambling, is a condition in which a person is addicted to gambling. More often than not, those who become problem gamblers spend large amounts of money and cause damage to much more than their wallets.

Gambling addiction costs families much more than money - sometimes it leaves them without money for food or for payment of bills.

If you think you may be a problem gambler or you know someone who might be, you need to act as soon as possible to help break the cycle of addiction and debt.
